MARS VICE CITY #1

MARS VICE CITY #1: Wipe Off That Grin

The Pitch: Our story starts in the crime infested slums of Moon York, Moon York. We open on the alien detective Tykar 'Ty' Baths. He is working deep undercover on his own trying to find his missing sister Carena. She is being held against her will by the arch criminal Hadrian, who is making a drug created using the blood of Bath's and Carena's people (Maldakiens). Boone also starts out in Moon York as an undercover detective on the trail of Hadrian, but finds himself the target of his own fellow policeman.

MVC is a book that rides a wave of nostalgia. Whilst this is often seen as detriment, here the love of '80s pop-culture and the way it's shaped our current tastes works to create a familiar backdrop. A cop who gets set-up, finds himself busted down to being effectively a fake cop on Mars. Only these aren't a new mean streets down which a man must walk. Instead Mars has become a simulated city – one based on the '80s Miami that Don Johnson and Phillip Michael-Thomas would have cruised through in a Ferrari scored to Jan Hammer and Phil Collins. Boone, our hero cop, finds himself living a fake life – a simulation of the job he takes so seriously, protecting and serving an illusion. MVC #1 is fast-paced, entertaining. But there's subtext there. The artifice Boone finds himself in is a good metaphor for not only our image-driven retro-addicted times, but for the the corruption that often seeps through police departments. Where the surface is clean, but the root filthy. MVC is fun and worth picking up, if only to see just how many lines of In The Air Tonight the team will use as titles for their comics!
